“Poet Tang Chang’s Institute of Modern Art” was the name of the space that Tang Chang established at his home in the Thonburi area in 1985. At a time when the Thai art scene offered very limited exhibition opportunities for independent artists, Chang transformed his private residence into a site for artistic practice and display. The space presented his own works alongside those of his students and his children.
From the 1970s onward, the growth of liberal thought in Thailand encouraged university students to seek artistic practices beyond academic institutions. Some of these young artists became Chang’s students. While the number of emerging artists steadily increased during this period, exhibition spaces remained scarce. In response, Chang opened his house in Thonburi as an alternative venue for exhibitions and as a shared space for artistic experimentation, learning, and exchange. In 1985, this initiative was formally named “Poet Tang Chang’s Institute of Modern Art.” More than an exhibition venue, the institute embodied the spirit of an educational institution and functioned as a place of learning and mentorship for younger generations. It is regarded as one of the early alternative art schools or independent art spaces in the formative years of Thai modern art.
As the grand opening exhibition of the Tang Chang Private Museum, “Poet Tang Chang’s Institute of Modern Art” revisits and reactivates one of Chang’s most significant legacies by adopting the name of this historic space. In this exhibition, the Institute is no longer understood as a physical site established in Thonburi in 1985, but as a conceptual framework encompassing the breadth of Chang’s artistic, pedagogical, and philosophical contributions. Like the original institute, it functions not merely as a space, but as a mode of thinking and practice. This exhibition traces how Chang shaped his work according to his own artistic logic and how these ideas unfolded and transformed in his later life. Serving as another retrospective, it presents his life and practice through artworks and archival materials. The exhibition invites viewers to engage with the formation of his distinctive approach to artistic modernism and to consider the enduring influence of his legacy.

“หอศิลป กวี จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” เป็นชื่อเรียกของพื้นที่ทางศิลปะแห่งหนึ่งที่ถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2528 ณ บ้านของจ่าง แซ่ตั้ง ในซอยกรุงธนบุรี 4 ฝั่งธนบุรี ในช่วงเวลานั้น วงการศิลปะไทยยังมีพื้นที่จัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะอยู่อย่างจำกัด จ่างได้ปรับเปลี่ยนพื้นที่ส่วนตัวให้กลายเป็นสถานที่สำหรับการสร้างสรรค์และการแสดงผลงานทางศิลปะ โดยนำเสนอผลงานของตนเองควบคู่ไปกับผลงานของลูกและลูกศิษย์ที่อาศัยอยู่กับเขาในช่วงเวลานั้น
หากพิจารณาย้อนไปถึงปลายทศวรรษที่ 2500 ในช่วงเวลาที่บรรยากาศของสังคมไทยเข้าสู่ “ยุคแสวงหา” การเติบโตของแนวคิดเสรีนิยมในสังคมไทยได้กระตุ้นให้นักศึกษาศิลปะในรั้วมหาวิทยาลัยแสวงหาแนวทางทางศิลปะที่อยู่นอกเหนือจากกรอบสถาบันการศึกษา นักศึกษาศิลปะหลายคนได้มาฝากตัวศึกษาศิลปะกับจ่าง ในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าว แม้จะมีการเติบโตขึ้นของวงการศิลปะและการเกิดขึ้นของศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ ทว่าพื้นที่สำหรับแสดงผลงานศิลปะยังคงจำกัดอยู่ในหอศิลป์ของราชการและสถาบันการศึกษา จ่างจึงเปิดบ้านฝั่งธนบุรีเป็นพื้นที่จัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะของตนเอง ลูก และลูกศิษย์ นอกจากนี้ บ้านของเขายังเป็นพื้นที่พำนักทางปัญญา สำหรับการถกเถียง เรียนรู้ และแลกเปลี่ยนทางศิลปะของศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ อาจถือได้ว่าพื้นที่แห่งนี้เป็นหนึ่งในพื้นที่ศิลปะทางเลือกในยุคแรกๆ และปรากฏตัวในฐานะ “หอศิลป กวี จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” อย่างเป็นทางการในระยะต่อมา
ในวาระการเปิดตัว “พิพิธภัณฑ์จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” นิทรรศการปฐมฤกษ์นี้ได้หยิบยกนามของ “หอศิลป กวี จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” มาเป็นแกนกลางในการทบทวนและตีความมรดกทางความคิดของจ่าง ในบริบทของนิทรรศการนี้ “หอศิลป กวี จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” มิได้มีความหมายเพียงพื้นที่ทางกายภาพ ณ ฝั่งธนบุรีในอดีต หากแต่เป็นกรอบแนวคิดที่ครอบคลุมมรดกทางศิลปะของจ่างทั้งหมด ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ผลงาน แนวคิด เรื่องราว ตลอดจนความเข้าใจทางศิลปะ ซึ่งรายล้อมอยู่กับความเป็นสถาบันของพื้นที่ดังกล่าวในอดีต นิทรรศการนี้แสดงให้เห็นถึงการก่อรูปของวิธีคิดทางศิลปะของเขา ตลอดจนการคลี่คลายและแปรเปลี่ยนของแนวคิดเหล่านี้ในช่วงบั้นปลายชีวิต นิทรรศการนำเสนอชีวิตและผลงานของเขาผ่านผลงานศิลปะและวัตถุจดหมายเหตุที่ทายาทได้เก็บรักษาไว้ ทั้งนี้ เพื่อเชื้อเชิญให้ผู้ชมร่วมทำความเข้าใจนิยามความเป็น “สมัยใหม่” ในแบบฉบับเฉพาะตัวของจ่าง ตลอดจนพินิจถึงอิทธิพลทางความคิดของเขาที่ยังคงส่งแรงสั่นสะเทือนต่อโลกศิลปะร่วมสมัยในประเทศไทยมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
