How should we study an artist? This question is not merely about revisiting the narrative of a life or reaffirming the greatness of the past. Rather, it is about seeking new possibilities for approaching the artist’s identity and intellectual legacy in a more comprehensive and critical manner. In collaboration with the Tang Chang Private Museum and the Education Department of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), we are pleased to invite audiences to the International Academic Symposium “Tang Chang: Reading | Reading: Tang Chang,” held on the occasion of the launch of the Tang Chang Private Museum. This symposium proposes a mode of reading that moves beyond viewing the artist solely through biographical accounts or grand narratives. Instead, it explores the dynamic relationships between the artist Tang Chang, his works, and the social contexts in which they were produced. These contexts are themselves constantly changing. The symposium therefore seeks to open new possibilities for studying the artist not as an isolated figure but as one element within broader networks of social and historical relations.
“Tang Chang: Reading | Reading: Tang Chang” features dialogues by leading Thai and international scholars who engage in a "reading" of the life and work of the late artist. While the artist has passed, his invaluable legacy endures through the management of his estate by the succeeding generation. Through processes of collection, interpretation, and systematic organization, “Tang Chang” ceases to be a static "object" of study. Instead, his work possesses the power to gaze back and challenge the frameworks of modern thought. The symposium also considers the management of the artist’s legacy while exploring the many thresholds that surround the artist, including the relationship between life and work, the dialogue between art and poetry, the crossing of cultural boundaries, and the shifting dynamics of history. These intersections suggest that understanding Tang Chang’s intellectual legacy cannot be reduced to a fixed conclusion. Instead, it remains an ongoing process that invites us to read and reread his work, uncovering new meanings within the shifting contexts of time.

เราจะศึกษาศิลปินคนหนึ่งอย่างไร? คำถามนี้มิใช่เพียงการรื้อฟื้นเรื่องราวชีวิตหรือตอกย้ำความยิ่งใหญ่ในอดีต หากแต่คือการแสวงหาความเป็นไปได้ใหม่ๆ ในการเข้าถึงตัวตนและมรดกทางความคิดอย่างรอบด้าน ด้วยความร่วมมือระหว่างพิพิธภัณฑ์จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง และฝ่ายการศึกษา หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร มีความยินดีที่จะนำทุกท่านเข้าสู่การประชุมสัมมนาทางวิชาการนานาชาติ “จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง: พินิจ | พินิจ: จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” ในวาระการเปิดตัว พิพิธภัณฑ์ จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง การประชุมสัมมนาครั้งนี้มุ่งนำเสนอการ “พินิจ” ที่ก้าวข้ามเพียงแค่การจ้องมองศิลปินผ่านประวัติชีวิตและเรื่องเล่าอันยิ่งใหญ่ ไปสู่การสำรวจพลวัตความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิลปิน “จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” ผลงาน ตลอดจนบริบททางสังคมที่ไม่เคยหยุดนิ่ง และแสดงให้เห็นความเป็นไปได้อื่นๆ ในการที่จะศึกษาศิลปินในฐานะองค์ประกอบหนึ่งที่สัมพันธ์กับโครงข่ายทางสังคมและประวัติศาสตร์ขนาดใหญ่
“จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง: พินิจ | พินิจ: จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” นำเสนอบทสนทนาจากนักวิชาการชั้นนำของไทยและต่างประเทศผ่านการ “พินิจ” ชีวิตและผลงานของ "จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง" ผู้ล่วงลับ แต่มรดกอันทรงคุณค่าของศิลปินยังคงดำรงอยู่ผ่านการจัดการโดยทายาทรุ่นหลัง การรวบรวม ตีความ ตลอดจนการจัดระเบียบ ทำให้ “จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” มิได้เป็นเพียง "วัตถุ" แห่งการศึกษาที่หยุดนิ่ง แต่กลับมีพลังในการจ้องมองและตั้งคำถาม กลับไปยังกรอบคิดของโลกสมัยใหม่ “จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง: พินิจ / พินิจ: จ่าง แซ่ตั้ง” เป็นบทสนทนาที่เข้าไป สำรวจการบริหารจัดการมรดกศิลปิน ตลอดจนการสำรวจรอยต่อต่างๆ ที่ปรากฏรายล้อมตัวศิลปิน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นชีวิตกับผลงาน ศิลปะกับกวีนิพนธ์ พรมแดนทางวัฒนธรรม ตลอดจนพลวัตของประวัติศาสตร์ สิ่งเหล่านี้ยืนยันว่าการทำความเข้าใจมรดกทางความคิดของจ่าง แซ่ตั้ง ไม่ใช่บทสรุปที่นิ่งสนิท แต่คือกระบวนการที่หมุนเวียนและก่อตัวใหม่ ซึ่งเชื้อเชิญให้เราอ่านย้อนกลับไปกลับมาเพื่อค้นหาความหมายใหม่ ในบริบทที่แปรเปลี่ยนไปตามกาลเวลา
